Crap!

I am sitting here in my pajamas, sipping my coffee, and received a scary email from my friend Donna Tocci... an email of disbelief.

Crap.
Crap.
Crap!

It's a much different race now.

(If guilty... this should be the end of careers. The sport can not survive or tolerate this. If the allegations are true, the teams need to clean house. If true, we all need to face the reality that our beloved sport is dirty and we have the power to make it clean by turning away until it is clean. I don't know how much of a stomach I have for the race now.)

I'm sorry to wreck your morning, Tim! When I saw the story about Ullrich in the USAToday I thought I might be still be dreaming - having a nightmare really. This is a very, very dark day in cycling.

Stomach the race. Support the race. Watch the race. Love the race. The alleged dopers are staying home. You won't ever get me to believe that Vinny and others are doping as well. Support the riders still out there doing it right. Don't turn away from the TdF

This news really shocked me as well. In fact, it really made me upset rather than angry. Like most people reading this blog, I have been getting really excited as the prolouge approached and this last minute decision made me sit and stare at the screen for a long time figuring out how to react. True or not, this sucks for the sport.

On the positive side, maybe Hincapie has a shot at bringing a tour win home to Greenville.

I was jsut as shocked. I was starting to get all excited for the race. Now that this has come out I have lost some faith in the sport. I still support the race because it is not the fault of the race but the fault of the racers and teams.

I hope the sport can clean up and make a come back from a second major doping scandal.

Should I be encouraged by the fact that the teams are taking a tough stance toward their big moneymakers? (This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you, Jan) Who are CSC without Basso and T-Mobile without Ullrich? Or is this too little, too late?

Is the race cleaner with these riders out or should we be even more suspicious of the innocence of the rest of the peloton?

It's a much different brand too! Or I think so. It's best to reserve judgment and I am. But I am a non-bike geek drawn to the beauty and teamwork and history and innocence of the sport.

For me it is not anger, rather it's sorrow I feel.

Shocking news, but the beat goes on.

What's this about NASCAR-loving DT being veg? I missed the press release.

Let's pretend the involved parties are all guilty. Besides us fans, I think the invidividual who's been screwed the most is Alexander Vinokourov. There was the shakeup with Liberty Seguros just a couple of months ago, the team re-organized as Astana Wurth, and now they don't have enough people on it to participate in the TdF, leaving Vinokourov completely out in the cold.

Fritz - I'm full of surprises. :)
And, not surprisingly, I agree with you about Vino. He's just a by-product of this mess.

Is Vino a victim or should he be standing up and telling the truth about what's really going on? I know snitches are frowned upon in our society, but what about whistleblowers? Has he been looking the other way for his own career's sake?
