I have a quick question for you, my wonderful readers;
What is your favorite sized gear to ride on your fixie on the street? Personally, I spend the bulk of my time on a 46x16... how about you? Leave your answer in the comments.

On my conversion I ride 48x18 and with 622x28 tires that gives me 71.4 gear inches.
42 x 17, because I like my knee
I started out on a 42/14, and then got a 46 chainring, and have been on 46/14 for a while now. I've gotten stronger but I get sore in the knees after longer rides, usually > 20 miles. I ordered a 16t yesterday, should be here soon. I imagine I'll be riding the same as you with the 16 for a while once I get it.

I'm on a 42x16, but considering a change. So will be interested to see what others say also :)

I can ride up most anything, but still keep my legs together down the other side and in most group rides for up to about 120 miles.

I changed my Speciale to have a 53X16. I need the big gear to keep up with the taxis.
42x15
44x16 b/c of hills. 170mm Campy crank on a 61cm frame.
48 x 17. Requires standing for most climbs, but luckily noting is longer than a mile in N. Texas.
I like to spin, so 42x17 it is for me :)
42 x 15 but had been running 42 x 16. i wanted to go a little bit faster.
I like to run 42 x 16, which gives me a nice moderate 69 inches and a reasonable 8 skid patches. I could have 17 skid patches if I went with 43x17 :-)
SOme of you guys (including you, Carl) only have 3 skid patches.
Was riding 50x19 with the other side a 15. But sold the track frame and haven't built up a new one just yet. Got a DeepV/Phil WS and Campy Record Pista cranks just sitting around
42x15 perfect gearing in the bay and good in CO too!

47x17 for winter here in Wisco, 47 or 48x16 in summer time. Also, 1/8 chains, cogs and rings for the extended life span.
Fritz, that would be an issue if I skidded. Which I can only do on dirt, snow or VERY smooth concrete. But I'm ok with that.
— 46x16 on hills, if I go for a long, flat ride I use 48x16.
By the way, are you going to be at the Seattle Bike Expo this weekend?
On my Masi Speciale, I ride with the stock 48t chainring and a 19t cog. Typically I'm riding into headwinds at least half the time here at the beach, so I like to spin it and save the knees.

43x15, cause I'm tough and stuff. Honestly though, anything bigger that 75 inches is overkill for the most part. And yes, I know, 43x15 = 77.3. But hey, I've been doing this for a while.
Dudes that run more than 80 inches are simply playing, "my dick is bigger than yours". I don't care where you live, there is no reason to run bigger than a 80 on the street.

48x19 but I have 300m elevation gain each way on my commute
48x17 when it's all flat
48x16 allows me to descend in control. It's getting to be too big as I ride less frequently. I was always warned against multiples, but never had a problem.
42x16 does me fairly well around NorthPark -SD. Rode up to La Jolla on it a few times, too.
I roll throw the pothole infested streets on a 48 x 16 ride....
Now my Honda xl600. thats another story.
My masi is still my go to girl on two wheels.
52x19 on 170mm => 73.9 gear inches. About a gear easier than you 46x16...

I think the larger chainring gives more control. I normally don't need to do a skid stop... a little resistance will do.
