Tour de France- it's over.

I am officially done with this year's Tour.

It was fun while it lasted.

Me too, Tim.

personally i don't know what the difference is if he doped in mexico or italy. oh yea, he hasn't tested positive [ever] and his bike is still cool as sh_t. than again he is a bike racer, so he is guilty until proven guility, i mean innocent. than again all the tough stages are over. this is kind of like the opposite of last year, this actually puts an american on the podium. with out a doping charge or positive test result, ras still deserves to win, all this make up the rules as we like attitude is not helping cycling. have a rule and stick to it, did he or didn't he?

Tim,

I'm sorry about this, really. All these stories (again) are definitely going to hurt many genuine sports fans. Frequent flyer of Utopia airlines (Geee... got many miles on that one!), I just dreamt of re-inventing simple races between friends, with no sponsors, just buddies sharing their passion. Just for the fun of it... with heart, smiles and respect (...and even if I have not been riding a bike for years, I'd go for a race like that!).

I'm with you on this one my friend.

we do that every weekend, you are always welcome to join us [if you make it to the westcoast, actually i will be in your neck of the woods in august]. as it looks, you are right, it is now about US, heart, smiles, passion, respect... i like it.

iheartbikes said...

so is the tour going to be like a tree in the woods now? if someone finishes this year will anyone be there to hear it?

I won't.

The lustre that was has definately tarnished-or blackened, more correctly. But it does remind us that riding should be done, not observed. Whether or not you watch le Tour, or the Vuelta, or any other race, get out there and enjoy the real reason you do what you do-the Ride! While watching Dave ride his Masi in Breaking Away may have attracted you to cycling it wasn't what kept you coming back for the pain. Ride on friends, ride on!

Sean Howard said...

did you manage to sleep at all, Tim??? ;)

Michael said...

Same here...I give up.

Josh Boggs said...

Sorry, Tim. I feel your pain.

Calling it Tour de France is so old fashioned. For obvious marketing purposes we better call it chicken run from now on.

This is just wrong on so many levels...just wrong and sad.

Did anyone watch the stage last night knowing that that yellow jersey was pulled out after the stage? Not me. I watched the pre-race stuff to see if there was any new news and then stepped away from the TV.

This isn't just going to effect riders, teams and sponsors, but event organizers (of large and small events), television broadcasters (we've already seen it in Germany), spectators and the future of the sport - seriously, what kid wants to look up to cycling now with all this upheaval?

Sad.

Great, Rasmussen is out; that is good news. He has been under suspicion for a while and now he is gone. Yeah it sucks for the sport, but don't give up on the tour. This constant doping news is depressing, but there are still clean riders who care about the integrity of the sport as much as we do. I am going to continue following the tour until it ends Sunday even if I have to watch it with tears in my eyes.

I am not naive enough to think that the peloton is clean at this point, but at least cycling is trying (regardless of some of my beefs with the UCI). Even though pro cycling has problems, I am not giving up on the sport that I love. Instead, I choose to give up on MLB and all other pro sports that just ignore doping problems. Long live Hark Aaron's home run record.

Sara Best said...

Come on guys. We can't complain about what doping is doing to cycling and then turn our backs on it the minute they start to actually crack down and root out the cheaters.

The tests are getting tougher, the teams and race organizers are starting to take it seriously, and we're seeing the results at this year's Tour.

It had to get worse before it was going to get better.

If you weren't going to be there to support cycling as it went through the pains of cleaning itself up, then you shouldn't have complained about the problems in the first place.

Sara Best said...

Sorry Tim, I'm not trying to attack you personally - or anyone else posting their feelings about the situation here. It just irked me to see your post saying that you were giving up on the Tour.

The sport is in trouble and I just feel really strongly that this is the absolute worst time for any of us to be giving up on it.

It's kind of like a long-term relationship. We've hit a rocky patch. But if you ever loved it, now's the time to stand by it.

;)

CK said...

I am so sorry Tim, the passion you and your peers have for this sport is inspiring and this must leave you feeling angry, and empty.

But Sara's comment inspired me...I think she's right. The sport needs the good to set the tone. Maybe that will make you think about it, or maybe you need time.

It's a mess and I sure hate it when a few doped-up apples spoil the whole Tour...but maybe the sport needs you more than ever--think of all it's done for you (I'm just going off all that you've told me that is amazing and exhilirating about cycling).

The darkness in anything is most noticeable when you have the stark contrast of what is good and true, the light of truth. Don't focus on the darkness, but the light of the advancing tests which will help clean up the sport.

This is, strangely enough, a time for celebration. The doping tests are getting better and leaving less room for those who would destroy the sport through cheating.

Cheers!

I like these quotes from race director Christian Prudhomme (via Cyclingnews):

"the Tour is a magnificent event and we need to defend it."

“the Tour is not the enemy. Doping is."

Paterfamilias said...

Maybe you should edit your Vino post so the text isn't so large...

Sara Best said...

Now THAT is funny!

That's the first time I've laughed today - thanks paterfamilias.

Tour de Farce you mean. I gave up years ago.

wow, as a very casual fan of riding the road bike I had on casually noticed the TDF due to Lance so I have very little history. Of course I am aware of all of the doping stories the press feeds on. Anyway, I have been awestruck by the beauty of the French countryside, the passion of the fans and the inescapable fact that I can't imagine riding a bike up the alps while averaging 20mph.....At least there is an effort to clean up the sport...NFL and MLB should take notice....
