It's Mother's Day

Today is Mother's Day, of course. Mother's Day is one of those "holidays" largely generated by the greeting card/ consumerism machine, but we all have mothers...

I'm lucky to have an exceptional mother. I don't talk about her here very often, but she's a fantastic woman who has given me many things throughout my life- most importantly her love and support. She's been there through the highs and lows, as well as the breaks and bleeds... and stitches... and tetanus shots... etc.

When I was unable to take care of myself after my crash and my girlfriend had returned to Taiwan, it was my mom who once again took care of me as I recovered. She's changed more bandages, applied more medicated cremes, given more prescriptions, driven to more doctor visits and even given more shots than any mother should ever have to.

My mother gave my sister and I all the things we needed to grow up to become adults. We sometimes didn't get all the things we wanted, but we always had what we needed. She worked hard to make sure that my sister and I were able to get an education and sacrificed a lot for us. Thanks to her, both my sister and I made it to adulthood and parenthood.

Mom- thank you for always being there, even when it was not a comfortable thing for you... especially when it meant I was bleeding all over the inside of your car or needed another expensive trip to the ER. Your love and support have always meant more to me than anything I can say or do will ever be able to properly illustrate. Thank you!

It would be impossible for me to talk about Mother's Day without at least a brief mention of my ex-wife as well. My ex is a wonderful mother and the kids are lucky to have her as their mother. Things obviously did not "work out" for our marriage, but I am very happy to share in parenting with her. We still talk and laugh as we share our separate experiences of parenthood. It's a great thing to be able to work with her to raise the kids- even if from two different locations. Thank you, Meg.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there- your thankless work is not totally unrecognized. Maybe you only get one day per year where you don't have to run the house and do all the work, but we're all lucky every day of the year to have you here.

Thanks Mom!

Today is Mother's Day and my mom's gift is the fact I am out of the hospital and on the road to recovery. She'd probably prefer flowers... but... or the announcement of my retirement from racing (at least on the track)... but...

But anyway, she gets to keep me around to worry about for a few more years at least (I hope). So Mom- thank you for all the love and support over the years. I know it hasn't always been easy and has certainly been bloody, but you gave me good enough genes to keep bouncing back and never give up. As much as quitting racing might make you feel a little better about my safety, you KNOW I'd just find another way to hurt myself. C'mon... this is me we're talking about... and besides, you DID teach me to not give up... so at least I listened to you on one occasion anyway.

For your "present" this year, I promise I will do my best to stay out of the hospital and to always remain conscious. Your love and support over the years has often been the difference between success and failure for me and I hope to one day repay you... somehow. Maybe I can make you a ceramic mug/ ashtray or some paper flowers? With my right hand bandaged up, if I use my left to paint you some pictures, it might be just like kindergarten all over again- I think I saw a blank spot on your refrigerator the last time I was there. Consider it...

I love you Mom!
